“When Miyazaki visited Pixar 4.5 years ago— a once in a lifetime event as far as I’m concerned— there was a Q&A on stage before they showed the exclusive Totoro short that’s only shown in the Ghibli museum, The question as I remember it, and I paraphrase, “You have many movies that feature female characters at the center. Any particular reason behind this?” He’d been cagey about all the other questions he’d been given. There was a question about Porco Rosoo’s transformation. He’d answered that was the question he was asked most all over the world. That was the answer. Everyone laughed at how deftly he declined. But to this question about female leads, he did answer. “Because I love women.” I feel it’s liberating to hear a master say what the work might already be saying. In this world of political correctness, to hear a frank disclosure that an artist has a muse is refreshing and empowering.”
